PRAY BY NUMBERS


The Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA) has just released statistical profiles of the former 13 political regions based on the Population and Housing Census of 2011. The Statistician - General of the NSA , Dr. John Steytler the Statistician - General of the NSA , said, data is now for the first time available for a geographical area. It means that we know where the problems are.

According to the latest estimate, the Namibian population is now 2.2 million, slightly higher than the 2.1 million counted in 2011.


The Khomas region has the largest population with 342,141 people, followed by Ohangwena (245446), Omusati (243,166) and former Kavango (223,352). Other regions also have large population , is Oshikoto (181973) , Oshana (176,674) and Erongo (150,809). Omaheke has the smallest population of 71,233. Others sparsely populated regions / / Karas (77,421) and Hardap (79,507).

Namibia is known as one of the least dense populated countries in the world with only 2.6 people per square kilometer. The population density of regions differs somewhat . The Zambezi region has 6.2 people per square kilometer compared to 0.5 persons in  / / Karas. 


The country has a young population with 57 % between the ages of 15 and 59 .

Steytler made ​​the point that the marital status of the population of great socio- economic importance because it is the stability or instability of a nation state .
As many as 59 % of the adult population has never been married. Only 20 % are married with certificates and 8 % are traditionally married. In the Zambezi region only 6 % are married with certificates; the majority are traditionally married. Oshikoto and Khomas, have the most certified weddings.

The literacy of population 15 - and older is estimated at 89 % , but Steytler suggested that one should be also look at the quality of such literacy and emphasized that schools for children up to four years old are still being neglected. Khomas , Erongo and / / Karas has the highest literacy rate (97 %), followed by 91 % in Hardap. The lowest literacy rates are in Kunene (65 %), Omaheke (73 %) and Otjozondjupa (83%).

Approximately 80 % of the country's population has access to potable water and 42 % have electricity. In the Erongo residents the highest access to these services (81 %).


Approximately 16 % of the population get their income from farming , 48 % of salaries and 15 % depend on pensions.
