HEAVY DRINKING A CONCERN

It is critical to acknowledge that Namibia has a serious problem with heavy alcohol consumption, says the Deputy Minister of Health and Social Services, Petrina Haingura, who was speaking at an alcohol stakeholders meeting in the capital last week.

She said reducing the level of social and health damage, which results from alcohol abuse, requires preparation, planning and cooperation by all stakeholders.
She further said alcohol abuse is associated with a variety of problems in society such as drinking and driving, the risk of HIV infection due to unprotected sex, poverty and unemployment to mention a few.

Haingura said the “devastating effects” of excessive alcohol consumption prompted her ministry to establish the Coalition on Responsible Drinking (CORD), which she said consists of different stakeholders across the country.
The aim of the coalition, said Haingura, is to effect change in attitudes and behaviour of people to abstain from alcohol consumption or to drink responsibly.

Please pray
against alcohol abuse and the effects of it on the Namibian society. Trust God for a positive impact of the Coalition on Responsible Drinking. Pray for the Namibia Blue Cross awareness campaigns in schools and for the effectiveness of all other substance abuse educative and preventative programs in the nation.
